Each month for our photo challenge, we like to invite a photographer whose work we admire to be our Guest Photography Judge.  This month, we are very excited to feature Brooke Shaden and we really enjoyed interviewing her about the journey her photography has been through.  Be sure to enter your “Make a Splash” photo into our photo challenge by Saturday. Brooke will be choosing her Top Ten favorite photos from the challenge which will then be showcased on I Heart Faces next week!

About Brooke Shaden

Brooke Shaden was born in March of 1987 in Lancaster, PA. She grew up near the “Amish Country” until attending Temple University.  Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with bachelor degrees in film and English. She now resides in Arizona with her husband and three cats.

My Photography Journey

I began creating self-portraits for ease and to have full control over the images, and have since grown into a self-portrait artist. Self portraiture for me is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, I attempt to place myself within worlds I wish we could live in, where secrets float out in the open, where the impossible becomes possible.

I work to create new worlds within my photographic frame. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements. My photography questions the definition of what it means to be alive.

Fun Q&A with Brooke

What inspires your photography the most?

Knowing that I can create what I see in my imagination.

What is your favorite quote?

“Fear is the mind killer.” I have it tattooed on my arm so I never forget. It is from Dune by Frank Herbert 🙂

What is the best photography advice you have ever received?

No one is handed success, it is only available to those who chase their dreams.

How do you promote your photography and services? (Especially since you recently moved to an entirely different region of the country?)

My photography can travel with me because I don’t have a service-based business like a lot of portrait photographers. I sell prints in galleries all over, so that is not location-sensitive. I travel to speak at events, and I license my images digitally for book covers and album art.

What do you love to do in your free time?

I love to get up with the sun and stretch, do yoga, and meditate. I love hiking, science fiction in all forms (Doctor Who!).
