We can hardly believe that it is already time to plan for our kids going back to school! We’ve rounded up some beautiful back to school photography ideas to inspire you whether you are planning to offer stylized Back to School mini-sessions or just wanting to take more memorable photos of your own child’s first day back to school. You can also read some great photography ideas from our co-founder Angie Arthur here:
Stylized Back-to-School Photo Sessions
These photographers utilized great props–from antique school desks to old lockers to stacks of vintage books–to create styled Back to School sessions. Stylized sessions provide a more artistic alternative to traditional school portraits.
You might even be able to borrow a school bus for your session. 🙂
Michele Anderson of Pinkle Toes Photography took the stylized back-to-school session idea a little further and teamed up with a local clothing boutique to incorporate a school supply drive.
Back to School Shopping
Speaking of school supplies, we loved getting a new box of crayons or choosing a new lunchbox or folder every year. Photos of these items can make excellent detail shots to help tell your child’s back to school story.
Probably one of the things kids enjoy most about the back to school routine is shopping for new clothes. Have your child or teen get her friends together for a fun back-to-school fashion photo shoot with their new outfits.
Tips for Capturing Your Child’s First Day Back to School
Having your child pose on the front porch every year is a great way to document the changes over the years. But you don’t need to stop there. Here are some great ideas for capturing your child’s first day back to school with more of a lifestyle photography approach:
Start photographing early to document the morning routine.
Stephanie Belton entered this photo of her daughter getting dressed for school in our Back to School photo challenge.
Capture their siblings’ reactions.
If there are younger siblings at home, chances are they feel pretty strongly about their older brother or sister leaving them to go off to school. They might be worried or sad. And then, there are those who are excited about having mom all to themselves for the day.
Don’t forget the bus!
By all means, get the photo of your child heading up the bus steps. But you can get some interesting shots by changing your perspective, too. Get a shot of the bus coming down the street or pulling away.
Take photos in the classroom
If this is your child’s very first day of school ever, then you probably are dropping them off yourself. (Yep, we were those moms, too.) Take the camera with you and get photos of them hanging up their backpacks, finding their desk, etc.
So whether your child is feeling confident and excited or nervous and reserved about the first back to school, we hope these ideas and tips will inspire you to take some meaningful photos as they go back to school.
