I Heart Faces Guest Judge Interview

Welcome to our Guest Judges for June’s “All Boy” Photo Challenge, Wendy and Tyler of Blue Lily Photography.

Wendy and Tyler from Blue Lily are a husband and wife team who travel all over the world taking family photos. The last time we met them, they were traveling through Texas and photographed I Heart Faces Co-Founder, Amy and her family.

A talented team, they strive to capture something different and special for families. They are known all over the world, booking most sessions for the year as soon as they announce their travel schedule. We’re excited to have them as the guest photographer judges here at I Heart Faces this month!

About Wendy and Tyler

We are Wendy and Tyler of Blue Lily- husband and wife team. We travel the world with our two kids, photographing families along the way. We homeschool the kids and shoot pictures in the early evenings and love (almost) every second of it :)

Our Photography Journey

The business started with just Wendy running it part time- but soon it snowballed too quickly and travel became an option. As soon as we traveled to one place, others requested new locations around the US, and then it spread abroad. Now we model our business after a “Follow Your Passion” type method. We do what we love, and that’s that.

Fun Q&A with Wendy and Tyler

What inspires your photography the most?

The cultural differences in the families we meet is very inspiring. You can see that the cultures we visit are so different but the basics of how a family works and the relationships they share is very much the same. It’s awesome.

What is your favorite quote?

“It’s hard to be narrow-minded when you have a fat passport.”– Patricia Shultz on NPR. Something we are trying to conquer.

What lens can’t you live without?

Both Tyler and Wendy are in love with the 70-200mm 2.8 Canon lens. But we shoot different camps now (both Nikon and Canon) so only Tyler still has it!

What is the best photography advice you have ever received?

White balance is everything. Get it right in camera and only tweak it to your own “look” afterwards.

How do you promote your photography and services?

We think our blog and links into our blog are the most important. Our business model revolves around getting clients images blogged either on their own blog, Facebook, etc.

What do you love to do in your free time?

We like to…. travel! Also one of our favorite things to do is go hiking or read to our kids out loud.

What do you like best about working together?

It’s always fun. There are times when one of us will go into a day of shoots in a “bad” mood and the other one will cheer the other up just by being silly. Between that and the excitement and thrill of shooting, we can’t stay in a bad mood for long. Working with each other is always an adventure. We love our monthly brainstorm meetings, which usually happen while driving hours and hours in our car to some new destination.
