Stylized Fashion Board Maternity I Heart Faces

It seems like everyone I know is pregnant these days – including myself. But, here’s the thing – some women embrace pregnancy like a second skin. They can totally rock out and feel comfortable in just about anything and everything they put on. The rest of us, however, feel like like beached whales. It doesn’t matter how much we spend at maternity stores for those “cute” outfits, we still feel as if we need something signaling our arrival, like flashing lights or beeping horns to let people know “wide load coming through.” And getting in front of a camera to have our photos taken? — You can just hang that idea up.

It is those women, women like me, who I am addressing today. There has truly never been a better time to be pregnant. The clothing that is in style right now addresses all of those “problem areas” that pregnant women worry about. We have maxi skirts and dresses for those swollen ankles and feet, jackets and cardigans for those not-so-tiny arms, scarves for the dreaded double chin, accessories to cinch in that tent-like clothing to give your body back some shape, and stripes to camouflage any number of areas. And the greatest part of embracing these fashion trends while pregnant? — You need not go and spend large amounts of money at those dreaded maternity stores. Simply purchase a few necessities such as some capris, a few tanks, a dress or two, and some skirts, and the rest you can probably find in your very own closet!

So my message to all you expecting mothers out there who feel unattractive:

Don’t steer away from having your photos taken during this memorable time in your life just because you feel uncomfortable. Believe me, I avoided having maternity photos taken with my first two pregnancies and I regret it to this day. I don’t plan on making that same mistake this time around. It’s my last pregnancy and I want to remember it always. So even though I may feel large and in charge, I think a little bit of styling will go a long way in at least making me feel more comfortable in front of the lens.

And my message to photographers:

Encourage these pregnant women with all you have to capture this special time in photos. Help them embrace and love their figures. Remind them of how beautiful they are right now in this moment; because in a few months, that baby belly will be just a memory.

Great post! I firmly believe that no matter how a woman feels when pregnant, professional maternity photography can help boost her body image. It forces her to remember how to celebrate what’s happening over dwelling on how uncomfortable and unattractive she feels. I talked a little more about that here: I would love if more women could learn to embrace the power and beauty of being pregnant…and that’s coming from someone who definitely didn’t feel good, beautiful, or happy when I was expecting.
