Post image for Dream Big Photography Workshop – Part I

{We are still recovering from last week’s I Heart Faces Workshop so there will be no Fix-It Friday this week.  Please enjoy this recap of the first day of our workshop instead!}

Last Friday, we hosted the advanced photographer portion of our “Dream Big” I Heart Faces Photography Workshop in Dallas.  Woot!!  It was so fun to meet up with these twelve amazing women who decided to take this step to learn how to improve their photography and take their photography dreams to the next level.  It was also amazing to finally meet four of our I Heart Faces Contributors who were able to be in Dallas to help with the workshop!

Morning Classes

Friday’s Workshop was taught and led by our I Heart Faces Contributor, Rachel Durik from Savor Photography. She is a former high school teacher turned professional photographer who put her teaching skills to good use that day. We all learned so much from her!

We learned to move beyond “open shade” natural light photography and how to use every type of natural lighting to capture beautiful photos (yes – even full sun!)

And quite a bit about the basics of incorporating flash and a lighting system into your photography. We are both natural light photographers so we found this portion of the workshop to be so fascinating!

Relaxing Break

During our lunch break we enjoyed…

  • Yummy goodies from a local deli and filling out a little tag with our dreams to hang on the Dream Tree (a random tag was then drawn and that person won a beautiful camera bag from Epiphanie Bags!!)

  • Discount shopping with our amazing sponsor, Arlington Camera.  The Tamron lenses and girly camera goodies they brought with them were so tempting and many of us gave in and bought something new to take home with us!

  • And….MASSAGES!!! We wanted to pamper everyone so each person got to enjoy a relaxing massage as part of their workshop experience that day. This part of the workshop was fabulous!!

Afternoon Class

After lunch, the learning continued while Rachel shared her editing workflow and many tips and tricks that she utilizes in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Portfolio Building Sessions

Then it was time for the real fun to begin!! Our portfolio building photo sessions (yay!!)

Session 1 – A High Stylized Birthday Party

Amy set up an amazing high stylized birthday party for everyone to photograph. We learned tips on how to capture the details and then all of our little birthday girls arrived and the party began!

Session 2 – High Fashion Couples Shoot

After being so good at the party, our little girl models were sent home with a goody bag and we got ready for our second Portfolio Building Session…a high fashion couples shoot with our friend Arden Prucha and her cutie-pie hubby, Paul.

The session was led by Rachel and Jessica Paige and we enjoyed learning posing tips and how to utilize the evening light before it dwindled away.

Not only is Arden an awesome photographer and long-time participant here at I Heart Faces, but we soon discovered that she is a natural born model as well!

Lots of Fun!

Of course, the day was filled with a ton of fun and silliness and the cute lips and mustaches that Amy designed just helped us all be even more crazy! (you can download these for FREE by joining our Facebook page!)

We also wrote our dreams on the “Dream Board” to share. These ranged from silly (“I dream of sleep!”)…to business oriented (“I dream of a natural light studio.”)…to heart wrenching reality (two of our participants, Amy and Adrienne, both have husbands who are fighting their own battles with cancer right now.)

We can’t end this post without thanking our sponsors who helped make our workshop as incredible as possible!  Many donated items for our photo sessions and others donated freebies for the awesome goodie bags that each person took home with them.  We thank them so much for the support they have shown I Heart Faces over and over again!

Stay Tuned!

Check back Sunday for a recap post of our Saturday Workshop. This day was geared more for beginner and amateur photographers and we met so many wonderful ladies that day.  We can’t wait to share more!

And shhhh!!! There’s a possibility that another I Heart Faces Workshop might be in the works for this spring! We are working hard behind the scenes to make this a possibility and can’t wait to share more details soon!

How wonderful! This year, I recognize many more faces than last year; it’s almost like looking at pictures from a family reunion. Sweet Adrienne…. so glad that she and my Dana met up and were able to pray together. And next year, people… I want to be there next year. It will be my turn, I’m sure of it…
