We’re so excited to introduce Alison Conklin as our Guest Photographer Judge this week…she is an amazing wedding, engagement and portrait photographer located in Pennsylvania.
Alison writes: I am Alison. I love art, photography, and music. I am married to my soul mate and have the most amazing children who never cease to amaze me.
Alison’s Photography Journey:
I received my very first camera on Christmas morning when I was five years old: a plastic, Fisher Price camera.
As the daughter of two chemists with a passion for photography, I grew up surrounded by beautiful black and white photos that my parents had developed in their darkroom.
At the age of 14, I lost my mother and found comfort in sorting through my parents’ old photos. They weren’t just Sears portrait photos. They were pictures of my mom laughing and I learned who she was through these images. That is when I realized the importance and power of photography. My father built me a darkroom where I spent most of my days and nights.
In 2004, I took a leap of faith, deciding to pursue my passion as a livelihood.

Alison’s Favorite Face Photos:

I love this photo of this little guy. He was so happy to be playing in the water and I was playing a good old fashion game of peek a boo with him!

Candid photos are the best.

I love this photo because of the bride’s face – she is so happy and I love the energy between them as well as the veil that is being swept up.

These two handsome men are my sons

The rain caught up with us half way into the engagement session… but I am so glad that it did! I love the fun and emotion caught in this series.
Fun Q&A with Alison:
- What do you love most about capturing faces?
I love that everyone is unique. I love that everyone has something amazing that makes them beautiful. I love that everyone has a story and experience that I can learn from by simply photographing them. Everyone wants to be seen and when I get the chance to capture someone in a quiet moment or an outrageous laugh it is my favorite thing.
- What do you find most difficult about capturing faces?
I think as soon as everyone is comfortable being behind the lens everything falls into place… but getting to the point where your clients are comfortable can be challenging.
- How would you describe your favorite shoot?
Any photo shoot that involves tons of laughter is my favorite. One of my favorite locations was shooting a wedding in Ireland last summer. It was incredible and I loved all of it.

I love Alison’s history! I personally believe that learning the technical side to photography is best learned in the darkroom. I’m so jealous she had her own!!
