It’s lovely to welcome Jonathan Dear from Vibrant Photography as our Guest Photographer Judge this week! During one of our excursions around the photography-blogosphere last year we stumbled upon his site and fell in love with his vivid style of photography. We are so happy that it worked out for him to visit with us during this week’s photo challenge.
Jonathan writes: Vibrant Photography is Jonathan, Naomi and their 3 boys. Jonathan is the main photographer with Naomi doing a great job supporting the business with accounts, album designing and all things other. As we find it hard talking about ourselves head over to the about section of our website for more details!
Jonathan’s Photography Journey:
I never really knew what I wanted to do when I was at high school, even when I graduated. Photography was always a hobby of mine but I never dreamed I could make a living from it. After spending a few years as a graphic designer, I met Naomi and we got married. Not long after we were married I became sick. Real sick. I left my current job, moved house and totally changed up my lifestyle. I was facing more corrective surgery and as a result found it hard to find employment. It was then we decided to employ ourselves and start Vibrant Photography. We really put ourselves out there in some unique ways and subsequently booked and shot 44 weddings in our first year of business. Now in year 3 of our business, and some 120 weddings later we’ve quadrupled our starting price and managed to create a strong brand and referral network. Oh and we’ve had 3 boys too!
Several of Jonathan’s Favorite Face Photos:

I loved Tiana’s gorgeous eyes, it was the first thing I was drawn to when I met her recently for a shoot.

This photo is really who my son Sam is – quirky, fun and always full of joy.

I love the range of faces being pulled by these mini-bridal party members!

I actually went to school with this bride, Cassie – this is how I always remembered her after all the years – full of happiness and smiles.
Fun Q&A with Jonathan:
- What do you love most about capturing faces?
Happiness. Happy, fun, excited, giddy faces. I guess thats why I shoot weddings and not funerals. To me a shoot is awesome when I capture 2 people oblivious to the camera, having fun and enjoying each-others company.
- What do you find most difficult about capturing faces?
Early on I found it difficult photographing people that were reluctant in having their photo taken. I quickly learnt lots of tricks to help put couple’s at ease & have some fun!
- Briefly describe your most exciting or favorite photo shoot.
In the first year of our business I shot a destination wedding in Lake Wanaka, New Zealand. I travelled over there a few days before and had a great time hanging out with the Bride & Groom as well as their bridal party. We had so much fun and it was great to have input into where they held their ceremony and at the right time for the nicest light! We are still great friends with the Bride & Groom, we love it when clients become good friends.
- Do you have a “most embarrassing” photography moment you can share with us?
I once forgot to turn up to an e’session, thankfully it wasn’t a wedding (every wedding ‘togs nightmare!) Funnily enough it was the couple who were flying me over to New Zealand for their wedding so they were totally fine with it after much apologising and grovelling. Sometimes it is hard to balance family-life and the business. We are finally getting to a stage where we are creating the lifestyle we are after. Which is after all what its all about. Getting paid to do what we love and having a life in the process!
Jonathan’s Helpful Hint:
One thing I have invested alot of time, money and practice in, is lighting. When you shoot weddings you need to know how to create beautiful images in any situation. High midday sun with no shade, flat overcast weather, location-choices from hell and beyond…etc. I think one of the best areas we can educate ourselves, in terms of technical ability, is learning to see light and provide light if required.
In terms of shooting faces, I love to put light in people’s eyes. It really makes the face alot more engaging and brings focus to the face. I do this using reflectors, off-camera flash or positioning the couple in great natural light.
On my blog I often post some behind-the-scenes, technical information on some of the images I shoot. I have a ’vi’ category which contains some posts with this additional info. Whenever you see a ‘vi’ watermark on an image, roll your cursor over the image it will change to show the technical details of how I lit, posed or shot that image. Check this out directly here and subscribe to my blog here.
Jonathan’s Photography Equipment:
I shoot with
2 Canon 5D2′s
1 Canon 5D
17-40/4L
28/1.8
45 tse
50/1.2L – favourite!
100/2.8 macro
135/2L
70-200/2.8L IS
… obviously not all at once!
I also have just about a truck-load of other lighting gear including; California Sunbounce reflectors, videolights, high-powered off-camera flash and even a 43.5″ beauty dish from Mola. You know you’ve probably got too much stuff when it doesn’t fit in the boot and the rear of the car.
All my editing is currently done inside Photoshop CS4 on an Eizo monitor and Wacom tablet.

Absolutely thrilled to have you visiting with us this week Jonathan!
I just have to ask…. When you say “I quickly learnt lots of tricks to help put couple’s at ease & have some fun!” – you have to share what a few of those tricks are!!
So many of us struggle with helping the client feel at ease. I’d love to know a few of your tricks!

Jonathan – beautiful photos. I love the one of the bride and groom where you painted in the light with your flash!
And I’m voting yes for the tutorial on reflectors – I’m just to the point where I’m looking into them to help avoid hooded eyes and improve light on outdoor portraits. I was actually looking at some last night to figure out what one would be good to start with, any recommendations?
Wow Jono… you’re a star now
You were always a star person anyway with great photography and mostly great people skills. It takes more than great lighting, great equipment and great exposures and editing skills… and Jono has truck loads of all that… it takes amazing people skills and Jono’s life journey has given him a train load of that… He’s gonna be big folks !!! You heard it here first – LOL….
Seriously he’s a great person and I hope he still talks to me after he’s famous.
Jonathan! It’s so cool to see you on here – and indeed you are a fab photographer!!! You deserve it! One of my absolute fave wedding photos is one that you took of us on the beach. (I can tell it’s yours cause it has a distinctly different style than Michelle’s:) There is also another one that you took that I love on the steps across from QVB downtown Sydney. LOVE! We were soooooo lucky to have you!!!!
Everybody… I had the PLEASURE of having Jonathan as a photographer at our wedding and he is indeed as great to work with as he sounds! So… much… FUN. Also very professional, and of course great work.
Jonathan, well done mate!! And way to represent Oz!
Oh forgot to add – of the images I provided above 3 were using a reflector. The top image of the bride and groom infront of the reeds, the picture of the little girl in pink and the last image of the bride on the chair. (although that last image I bounced a flash into the reflector)
– @ Laura Fox – I think my first piece of lighting equipment was a 5 in 1 round reflector! Naomi just reminded me I actually bought it BEFORE I got my first DSLR! Id totally do it again, but I’ve upgraded to some more rigid, easier to focus reflectors now that can cope with the wind and slightly less-intelligent operators
The original round one I ended up giving away!
I personally think everyone should have a reflector – I love the look it gives and they are so quick to shoot with. I will write up a tutorial on using reflectors and my recommendations for iHF in the future if people are interested.
Oh wow, I’m loving your work! Absolutely gorgeous. I really feel the emotion in the images. Can’t wait to follow your blog. What was your first lighting equipment piece and would you do it again or would you purchase something else? Thanks so much!
This was the first blog post that I came across…If I can recall, some of the words that came out were.. ‘Wow’ ‘That’s stunning’ ‘Gorgeous’ and whole lot of ‘How does he do that’. You can see why I was pretty quick to find that RSS feed button.

I came across Jonathan’s work under a year ago just after getting bitten by the photography bug myself. I was looking for photos/photographers that inspired me and kind of stopped at Jonathan’s appropriately named company’s site. In my opinion one of Australia’s top photographers and totally under rated. So as soon as I heard he was running workshops I booked myself in
Super excited.
Btw awesome site. Just stumbled across it, funnily enough through Jonathan’s RSS feed. Now to sign up…
I’m so excited you are judging for us this week! Your work is amazing!!!

Thanks guys for the comments and <3!
– @ Melissa – I am doing a few 1-on-1 workshops currently tailored towards lighting and editing techniques.
– @ Suki – I am self-taught. I've learnt alot through mediums like forums, flickr, google and blogs like this one. The best way I've really learnt though is playing! I set challenges for myself (like shooting midday no shade) etc and took risks (got the safe shots) but stretched myself and found out what worked. The beauty of the digital age is we can just bin the photos that don't work and learn from the ones that do.
Loved the interview of Jonathan. I need to go and bookmark his blog instantly.
Thanks for sharing so much about your work.
I still have a question. Have you been educated in photography or self-taught?!
Awesome how he started his business. Way to go, Jonathan!
RT @IHeartFaces: Interview with Jonathan Dear from Vibrant Photography: It’s lovely to welcome Jonathan Dear… http://goo.gl/fb/zVShU
What a great interview! Jonathan’s work is exceptional, and his attitude matches it. I love the vibrancy in the color photos and the rich contrast in the b/w’s. Most of all, I love the capture of emotions and expressions. No, wait.. MOST of all, I love the willingness to share…. that’s what makes I Heart Faces and photography in general so much fun!

The most amazing thing I found about Jonathan, having had the pleasure to meet him face-to-face, was his down to earth open attitude towards helping people and aspiring photographers.
I said to him a few weeks ago “Jonathan, in many blog posts and new images on flickr, you’re quite open to telling people exactly how you created the lighting setup, showing your before and after images and now you’re going to reveal all about your editing process in your 1-1 workshops? ..Aren’t you afraid of local photographers stealing all your ideas and then becoming better than you.. hence stealing some of your market??”
He said to me “Well if that means me having to change my style of photography and improve myself to be different then I say bring it on!”
If I can see a future with Jonathan it will be somewhere along the ‘Top 10 most influential photographers in the world’ down the track..

I instantly fell in love with Jonathan’s work 1 yr ago when researching OCF. I added him on Facebook just so that I could view his latest work. What I came to find was an incredibly humble and talented artist. I am booked into a one on one workshop with him and Im so excited!!! The future is so bright for him and I will forever be a fan of his work and of him as a person.
What an amazing photographer! : )
