We are so pleased to welcome Marianne Drenthe, from Marmalade Photography, to I ♥ Faces this week! Marianne is a children’s photographer from Chicago whose work is inspirational and wonderful.
When we asked Marianne to describe herself, she wrote “This is always the hardest part, HOW to define ones’ self. I’m pretty much an open book, I wear my heart on my sleeve. I am hopeful, I am a dreamer, I love my life, my family. I am a mom, a wife, a daughter, a sister. I have been a nurse, a waitress, a hostess, a video store clerk. I have ALWAYS been a photographer and now I do it not only for the love of it but as my life’s work! I am the luckiest girl ever.”
Marianne’s Photography Journey:
The youngest of my siblings is my brother Matt (who is 17 years older than me). When I was in kindergarten Matt purchased a Canon AE-1 and I fell in love!! My mom bought his old Vivitar 110 camera and I’d play with it when she’d let me, eventually finding an old old Kodak 126 camera at a garage sale when I was about in 3rd grade. That was my first very own camera. I eventually moved up to a 35 mm point & shoot and then finally had my very own film EOS Rebel (with a 50/1.8 that served me VERY well all those years). I have always been that annoying friend carrying the camera and I have thousands of images to prove it. I have always been drawn to photographing faces, not necessarily full on smiling at the camera but the myriad of expressions, profiles, sidelong glances, all of it fascinates me! When my daughters were little I had two film bodies I’d use, one dedicated to black & white film and the other to color and I spent much of their early lives snapping away and processing countless rolls of film.
I finally got bold and spent a small fortune on an Olympus 5050z late 2003 and was HOOKED on digital, I soon upgraded to the Canon EOS 20D in early 2005 and started my business a few months after with much encouragement by friends and family to do so (taking the lead of a friend who was starting her own day spa business, her boldness and lack of fear fueled my inner entrepreneur!). Soon after starting my business I invested heavily in a Canon 5D and several fine pieces of L glass lenses (the 70-200, the 24-70 and a few other non L lenses). I opened my studio in early 2007 and the rest is history!

Marianne’s Helpful Photography Hint:
Marianne has created an extremely useful resource for a professional photographer to refer their clients to…a guide for consumers to read through that describes the value of a custom photography session. We highly recommend that you read through this article that Marianne has written and possibly even link to it on your site. It’s absolutely fabulous!
